111. Ellipsis.

Home is no place for her. Her surroundings, too familiar to interest, is the dead backdrop of her thoughts, a flickering bulb the ellipsis to crown it all.

She had started with a plan, and promptly forgot it. For what? Living from one paycheck to the next. A tedious work week and a self-imposed reclusion. Why do her heart and chest ache when she thinks of possibilities? A life of possibilities, of days that blend together, and no big finish. A hanging ending in an all-but-finished story.

She leaves as she hears the distant rattle of the bus returning from its route. She is more alone with herself in here than out there.

And she can’t be alone with herself.

This is part four of a new short-short story series, called Pay Attention.
