How to poach an egg in the microwave

Created on Sunday, February 25, 2018.

I keep forgetting how to do this, so here it is.

Quantity Unit Item
1 pc Normal-sized microwave-safe mug
1/2 cup Room-temp water (125 mL or 125 g)
1 pc Large egg (50–60 g)
1 pc Fork
1 pc Microwave (mine is 1200 W)
  1. Put the water into a mug.
  2. Crack the egg gently into the water.
  3. Pierce the egg’s yolk in two places with the fork. Don’t forget this, or else you may have to clean exploded egg out of your microwave.
  4. Put the mug inside the microwave. Cook at full power for 40 seconds.
  5. Take out the mug. The egg’s underside is still undercooked, so use the fork to invert the egg.
  6. Put the mug inside the microwave. Cook at full power for 10 seconds.
  7. Drain the water away. It works best to hold the egg on your fork and allow it to drain through the tines. Do this for both sides of the egg to allow water and any uncooked whites inside the egg to drain away.
  8. Serve egg. It should be semi-hard boiled with just a little bit of liquid yolk.
  9. If you want to do multiple eggs, either shorten the cooking time to account for the heat that is already in the mug + water, or cool the mug down and use new room-temperature water.
That's all there is, there isn't any more.
