The War Game Manual 8th Basic

6.0 Attacking

6.1 General attacking

A unit's Rng is how far away in clicks an enemy can be for the unit to be able to attack it. The most common Rng value is Rng 1, meaning both units must be one click apart. Rng values are shown along with other unit information in section 7.0.

To attack with vehicles and Riflemen, find an enemy inside, partially covered by or 'close enough' (see Appendix 4) to your range and tell your opponent about your intended target. Roll two dice and note the result:

1 - 6: The attack failed. The enemy unit was not killed.
7 - 12: The attack is successful. The enemy is removed from the game.

When a transport is targeted and destroyed, its occupants are destroyed too. Only Battery units are allowed to attack units that are on the other side of obstacles: rifles can't shoot through hills! Attacking always ends the unit's turn.

6.2 Attacking with Battery units

Find an enemy inside, partially covered by or 'close enough' to your Battery unit and mark it. Roll one die and note the result:

1, 2 or 3: The shell was a dud, and did nothing.
4: The shell exploded on target.
5: The shell exploded one click South.
6: The shell exploded one click North.

The shells that explode destroy all units in a one-click radius of where the shell exploded. It destroys both enemy units and your own units, so beware of shelling near your front line. 'Close enough' does not apply to the damage radius.

Battery units must fire on an enemy unit. They are not allowed to attack the ground. Battery units can fire on enemies on the other side of obstacles.
